How much "Net" is left in the WWW?

Alongside with the ongoing development of the web, its structure more and more tapers off being a real net. During pioneer times of the web it was like give and take to post links to other websites for helping each other to be found. There was no Google indexing your website automatically every day. But today both the big websites as well as even founders of the web more and more develop towards self referencing "blobs" without any way out, or let's call them "Walled Gardens". Direct connections between websites decrease and previous structures of the web are falling apart. Everything seems to be held together only due to almighty search engines.
