What are the basic rules of the DIY genre and how did it develop in history? Which one are the best, funniest, most stupid and most useful ‘how to’s’? Where does the development lead to? What role plays Open Source and digital fabrication in this context? How to’s for the sake of how to’s. Amateur, professionel and kids. Fame, views and hits. Fast and simple. 4 steps or 90 seconds. Teaching, sharing, show off and the technology driven society. In a five day workshop 12 students of the Merz Akademie Stuttgart (DE) researched, discussed and hacked the format of DIY and How to - tutorials.

DIY generally tries to lead people away from paid products or services.
But when DIY platforms offer Kits, they again lead users back to “consumption”.

I think about a How to with Kit, where the Kit is completely senseless.
Also possible are social topics, where you less have to build something, but more have to act somehow etc.

- how to fuck up with studivz in 5 steps
- how to cause a financial crisis within 2 easy steps
- etc.
